Basement Underpinning

Underpinning may well be required on a building if another storey is to be added, or a basement constructed.

Basement Shells offers two types of underpinning: Traditional (also known as the ?mass concrete method?) and piled.

The usual method is traditional ? the way it?s been done for a century or more. This involves digging holes beneath the existing foundations and filling them with concrete.

The Piling method is used in cases where ground conditions are unstable or access is difficult. This method is more technically complex and requires specialised skills and machinery.

Underpinning is highly specialised work, requiring precise, conscientious planning, attention to detail and scrupulous adherence to safety procedures. If it is not done properly, severe damage to the building could result, or even total collapse.

Initially, a trial hole will be excavated beside the existing foundations so that conditions can be investigated and a structural design for the work prepared.

Underpinning is subject to building regulations and requires approval from local building control inspectors. Structural Repairs handle the liaison with building inspectors and arrange the required inspections as part of the service.

Our structural engineers and CAD technicians provide clients with a high level of professional service, due to our substantial reputation for efficiency. The services entail site visits to meet clients and detailed property surveys, which results in higher customer satisfaction rates
